Effects of Cold Weather on Windows

As winter progresses, it’s important to consider how extremely cold weather can impact your windows, especially if you have older ones in your home.

COLD = STRESS ON YOUR WINDOWS

When the weather gets really cold, it can cause stress cracks or pressure cracks in your windows. You will typically find these cracks around the edges of your home’s windows. In most cases, they start small. They can spread across the glass over time. If the temperature fluctuates a lot, these cracks may spread more quickly. On those days when the temps are below zero, you might find yourself cranking up the heat inside; this extreme fluctuation can cause those cracks to grow.

LOOK OUT FOR WARPING

Extreme temperatures can cause wood to warp and bow. This can cause structural issues with the windows, and you might notice a draft from these changes. It also allows the heat OUT!

FROZEN WINDOWS

Ice is NOT nice for windows. It can build up around them and cause them to freeze shut. With older windows, water can get into spaces in the window frame and then freeze. This can cause cracks or messed-up weather stripping when you try to open the window.
