If you live in Iowa or anywhere else with changing seasons, you are probably familiar with planning big projects like construction around the weather and time of year. If you are like most people, you probably assume that the spring and fall are the optimal times for remodeling a home. While this is true of many types of remodeling, particularly outdoor construction such as room additions, there are still a lot of things to be done in the warmer summer months (such as right now) and in the cold winter months. Read on for a guide of the benefits of doing different kinds of remodeling projects throughout different months of the year.
In general, remodeling contractors are slower during the colder winter months. That means that you may be able to pay less for materials than you would in the busier seasons such as Spring. If the ground is frozen, that is also a better time to digging and pouring foundations, so room additions and garage building projects are great options to pursue in the early part of the year. However, it is wise to aim to have any room additions or new construction framed in before the rainy springtime rolls around so that interior work can move along without rain day delays.
Because Spring is the traditional "home building season," it is the busiest and most expensive time for many remodeling contractors and builders. Despite the increase in material costs due to supply and demand in this busy season, it is a great time for a variety of outdoor projects. Decks, patios, and patio rooms or sunrooms are well-timed for spring. These projects require the softer ground that Spring brings and getting them completed before summertime means that you can enjoy the outdoor space all summer long.
The hottest months of the year are best for indoor projects like kitchen and bathroom remodeling or interior work in room additions. If you are working on outdoor remodeling or building projects in the summer months, the contractor will let you know if conditions are too hot to work in. But vacation season is another reason to consider remodeling and addition work in the summer. If you time things right, you can have the workers finish any parts of the project that cause inconvenience to you and your family while you are away and come home to a brand new room addition or newly remodeled room/home.
Outdoor projects are great to begin in fall and earlier winter since the weather and ground conditions are good at this time and homeowners are not worried about the holidays. Usually, contractors are working hard to get things finished by the middle of November before the holidays roll in in full force. As with the beginning of the year, materials may be less expensive at this time due to it being a slower period for builders and remodeling contractors. However, the winter weather may mean that shipping takes a bit longer than usual. Be sure to factor in some time for shipping delays and if you're willing to put up with work being done in your home over the holidays, this is a cost-effective way to go for all sorts of work, from outdoor construction to kitchen and bathroom renovation.
